Gypsophila elegans is a popular annual grown in cutting gardens. It is commonly called Baby’s Breath, and this white variety has sweet little single blooms and lance-like leaves on tall whispy stems. It is often used in floral arrangements as a filler that complements larger, more showy flowers. Baby’s Breath also dries well making it invaluable for dried floral arrangements. It is easy and fast to grow from seed and because it is short-lived many gardeners continue to sow the seed outdoors in a prepared seedbed in 3 – 4 week intervals to have a continuous supply for cutting. Sow seed outdoors once frost danger has passed. Press the seeds into the soil covering them with 1/16 inch of soil. Keep the seed moist until germination. With temperatures of 70F, germination is normally within 21 days. Space the plants 10 inches apart. Grow in full sun and in well-drained soil. Gypsophila is usually resistant to deer.
