Daruma has been a symbol of good luck for many years in Japan. He was a renown Indian priest who lived about 1500 years ago. He went to China and founded the Zen sect of Buddhism. He spent years in meditation, facing a wall. This doll represents patience and perseverance. Daruma is traditionally purchased when someone start a new business, takes exams, or at the beginning of the new year for good luck. One eye is painted in when a wish is made.
