There are 5 rounds in Age of Galaxy. In each round, players take turns performing actions (Colonize, Develop, Research, Explore, Trade, Nominate, Manufacture, Retrieve, or Scavenge), interacting with the other players and the randomly set up star systems. You will have a hand of 7 faction cards in the beginning. Selecting 3 of them as the main factions is one of the critical decisions for the game. Different paths to victory are guaranteed, with the existence of numerous combinations of faction abilities. However, you need not make all the decisions in round 1. Not like the first main faction card that must be played in the beginning (to represent your civilization), the other 2 can be played much later. Playing all 3 factions in round 1 to form a powerful alliance can give you a strong start, but playing factions later than your opponents may also give you the advantage to modify your tactics. The remaining 4 cards are not useless! They are still willing to assist you in the course to expand your empire. You may discard them in critical moments to acquire one-off reinforcements. For example, Bjordolf will give you one ship while discarding it. That will be a cool reinforcement just before a war. After 5 rounds, the player with the highest Victory Points wins the game!
