Its lower compartments will hold an additional 5,566 cubic feet (158 cubic meters) of containerized or bulk cargo. The MD-11 aircraft design was based on the DC-10. Design changes and improvements included a longer fuselage, winglets for improved aerodynamics, a redesigned tail assembly, more powerful engines, and a more advanced flight deck featuring an electronic flight instrument system allowing a reduction to two flight crew.
