Eugene Goldwasser (1922-2010) was born in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from the University of Chicago, where he also earned a PhD in biochemistry, and where he remained as a faculty member for his entire career. His long-term project of purifying the hormone erythropoietin (epo) was a signal success of pure science in the twentieth century, and contributed directly to the rapid growth of the biotech industry in the 1980s, while also helping relieve the suffering of millions of patients suffering anemia due to kidney disease, cancer, and other illnesses. Among other awards, he received The Prince Mahidol Medal of the Kingdom of Thailand, The French Medical Scientific Communityâs âTamis de Pepites Rouges,â election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, The Amgen Award of the International Society of Nephrology, and The Karl Landsteiner Memorial Award of American Association of Blood Banks. He completed this memoir shortly before his death.
