About Micronesian Blues

Product Description His plane nearly crashed, the cops he'd been hired to train almost killed him, and he ingested a substance that bore a close resemblance to elephant snot — all during his first two days on the job.Micronesian Blues tells the true story of former L.A. street cop Bryan Vila’s hilarious road to cross-cultural enlightenment as a police chief in the far Pacific islands of Micronesia.Through lively narrative laced with wry humor, it chronicles his adventures and misadventures on Saipan, Ponape (now Pohnpei), Truk (now Chuuk), Palau, Yap, Kosrae, and Kwajalein. Trial and error was the name of the game in this dubious paradise, where Bryan had to learn the rules — or make them up — as he went. Yet he embraced island life, succeeded in his new role, and ultimately found himself profoundly changed by his experiences in Micronesia and the lessons he learned there. Review "Do I recommend Micronesian Blues? Wholeheartedly! It is a brilliant piece of travel literature that entertains, enlightens, and educates. You will learn a lot. You will laugh. You will enjoy every single second spent with this book in your hands. And then, after reaching the last sentence, you will want to read it again." - Pasifika Truthfully "If you're looking for the 'bottom line' early on in this review, let me give it to you now -- buy it, but be warned, you may not be able to stop reading it until you've read the last page....  Honestly, I can't remember the last time that I read a book that so fully engaged me." -Bill Jaynes, The Kaselehlie Press "This is a highly entertaining travelogue of hot spots throughout the former TT at a time of significant upheaval and political machination from 1978 to the early 1980s....  The book is filled with delightful vignettes.... It's worth reading for anyone who wants an unexpurgated view of the islands in a very interesting period of their political development."  - Giff Johnson, Marshall Islands Journal "Full of humour, respect, self-deprecation and a determination to find workable solutions, Bryan Vila and Cynthia Morris's account of Bryan's 6 years working in Micronesia gives us the best kind of story, the page turner where you wonder what the hell this guy is going to do next, and a real appreciation when the solution appears because somebody was gutsy enough to wing it and let it happen....  An excellent read, I highly recommend it."  -  Naomi James, DBE, author of At One with the Sea: Alone Around the World About the Author Bryan Vila is a professor emeritus of criminal justice at Washington State University and founder of its Simulated Hazardous Operational Tasks laboratory. His research interests include cross-cultural policing, police fatigue and work hours, and criminology theory. Prior to joining WSU in 2005, he directed crime control and prevention research at the U.S. Department of Justice.  Before he became an academic, Bryan served as a law enforcement officer for 17 years -- including nine years as a street cop and supervisor with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, six years as a police chief helping the emerging nations of Micronesia develop stable and culturally-appropriate law enforcement agencies, and two years as a federal law enforcement officer in Washington, D.C. Cynthia (Cyn) Morris has worked as a writer and editor since 1981, including 10 years as an award-winning science writer for the University of California, Irvine.
