About Sixty-one Never Outdone: Tales Of The United States
The Coast Guard Academy Class of 1961 originated in July of 1957, with well over 350 “swabs” arriving from all over the country. A total of 119 graduated in June of 1961. There was a single curriculum for our education, comprised primarily of engineering and science courses, as well as professional (military) studies. In 2019, a private Google Group was organized as a platform for classmates, and spouses of those who "crossed the bar", to communicate with each other. Many exchanges on this email platform were truly enervating or adventurous emails and and I have captured them, raw, rough and salty, as stories. I have edited all stories to make them read like a novel, although in fact they are essentially true, admittedly with possible exaggeration. I have tried to retain these stories as written: raw, rough and salty, but I have not transformed the content or intent originated by the author. A sea, air or war story does not necessarily have to be 100% true. In fact, one characteristic of a story is that embellishment could happen. Each time a story is told, the waves get higher and there might be some embellishment due to diminishing memory or possibly the storyteller’s creativity. However, by custom and tradition, any diminution of verifiable fact must be offset by humor.The Class of 1961 has an incredibly special – and perhaps unique – bond. I know of no other Coast Guard Academy class that can match our enduring closeness. Although my active duty in the Coast Guard only lasted five years, my bond with the Coast Guard and my classmates has remained loyal and strong.
