About The Golden Ass: Or Metamorphoses, The Ancient Roman

Unique Elements Author Biography About The Golden Ass “I little esteeme to see your visage and figure, little doe I regard the night and darknesse thereof, for you are my only light.” The Golden Ass, also known as the Metamorphoses,is a novel by Ancient Roman writer, philosopher and rhetorician Apuleius. This edition features the English translation by William Adlington, published in 1639. A story filled with enchantment and humour, it has inspired generations of writers including Shakespeare, Cervantes and Keats. Written towards the end of the second century AD, and the only novel from this period to survive in its entirety, The Golden Ass follows the story of Lucius, a young man whose keen interest in witchcraft results in his transformation into a donkey.
