About Take A Hike, Teddy

Product Description A Step 3 Step into Reading Biography Reader about Theodore Roosevelt—America's 26th President—and his efforts to protect our environment and establish national parks. Roosevelt battled asthma all his life, and the list of things he shouldn’t do was long. But when people told him “you can’t,” he set about proving them wrong. This book focuses on his inexhaustible enthusiasm and his commitment to preserving America’s natural resources.   Step 3 Readers feature engaging characters in easy-to-follow plots about popular topics. These books are for children who are ready to read on their own. Review "I had a smile on my face throughout the reading of Take a Hike, Teddy Roosevelt! The story is fun and engaging, the pictures bright and inviting, andyoungsters will delight in seeing all sorts of animals on just aboutevery page. The subtle way that Teddy grew older as the storyprogressed was well done, as was the message of conservation, which wasconveyed without being preachy. Add in the "Step into Reading" rating where the level of the book is clearly delineated...and you have a winner. Overall, this is agreat history lesson for kids and would make an excellent resource forthose who need to do a project on one of this nation's presidents." -Holly Connors, Feathered Quill, December 2015 "This step 3 early reader features the life story of Teddy Roosevelt, with an emphasis on his childhood and his growing love of the preservation of animals and habitat. It's filled with cheerful and colorful illustrations. This fantastic book is almost 50 pages but manages to make them interesting and easy to read. Biographies are great, but when they cross into learning about a President and saving the environment, it's a perfect mix for a school library. This book could be featured by a teacher for a variety of lessons, as well as a read alone for a student. I would add this book quickly to my collection! Now where to shelve it....." Rated: "Essential"EL(K-3) -ESSENTIAL Reviewer: Stephanie Elementary School Librarian & Author, from KISS THE BOOK book review site kissthebook.blogspot.com/ From the Author I started writing this book all the way back in 2007!  After a lot of time, the story changed from being about TR's determination to do all he could in his life to make America better - consistently stating "Certainly I CAN!" after people told him he couldn't achieve something.  Focusing on TR's dedication to conservation was my super-smart editor Anna Membrino's idea - and it was a smart one!  I hope young readers, librarians, teachers, and parents will read this book and then go about finding more books about TR, but even more importantly I hope everyone will do what Teddy's folks told him when he was young and get outdoors and explore!  America is filled with amazing parks and museums and nature to discover - honor TR and take a hike to these places! About the Author FRANK MURPHY has taught a wide variety of grades at the elementary for over 24 years. A history buff, basketball coach & fan, and popular speaker, Frank is the author of many fun historical fiction/biography books for young readers, including several popular Step into Reading History Readers - including the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio 2006 Best Book Award Winner Ben Franklin & the Magic Squares.  His all-time favorite book is Jerry Spinelli's Maniac Magee.  Among his other favorites are books by one of his editors, Shana Corey (he can't wait for her new book The Secret Subway!).  His favorite illustrator? Richard Walz, of course!   RICHARD WALZ is the illustrator of many humorous historical Step into Reading books. He lives in Northampton, Massachusetts.
