'A Little Night Music' is one of Stephen Sondheim's truly seminal works, a unique and thrilling re-imagining of the operetta form. Part dream, part fairy tale, 'A Little Night Music' tells a bittersweet tale of love and regret. With penetrating witty lyrics and a ravishing score composed almost entirely in 3/4 beat, Sondheim and his producer/director Harold Prince took the form into a provoking social and political context. In probing beneath the surface to expose the vulnerability of a group of sophisticates on a roundabout of love they gave the world it's first adult operetta. Like most of Sondheim's work this piece has charmed and provoked audiences wherever it has played ever since, and features the classic song "Send In The Clowns" which has been reworked in almost every genre by many mainstream musicians. This recording features an array of stars spanning the generations from Elizabeth Welch, Maria Friedman, Sian Philips, Jason Howard, Janis Kelly, Bonaventura Bottone, Eric Flynn, Megan Kelly and Susan Hampshire, conducted by John Owen Edwards.
