The hakama is a trouser like garment that was introduced to the Japanese culture in the beginning of the sixth century. The hakama used to be mandatory for men’s clothing, but is now more commonly used for formal events, such as tea ceremonies, and also used to practice a variety of sports, from kendo, iaido, aikido and many other sports. There are two different types of hakama that are commonly worn. The type that are split, like common pants, and those that are not split, to make movement easier and more open. This type of hakama is the unified version, making it easier to move around in while performing sports that require a lot of movement.
