Product Description In 1740 Great Britain declared war on Spain and so began the War of Jenkin’s Ear. The British decided to include American soldiers in the land force element of their Caribbean expedition, bringing Gooch’s Regiment into being. The Regiment was nominally commanded by the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia and composed of thirty-six companies raised in nine North American colonies. One of those companies was commanded by Lawrence Washington, the elder half brother of George Washington. They fought as Marines at the siege of Cartagena, an occupation of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, an assault on Portobello and finally an occupation of the Island of Ruatan. They were forced to serve as sailors, replacing an ever dwindling number of seamen suffering from life in the tropics in the days before modern medicine. They were America's First Marines! From the Back Cover "The research is thorough and well documented. I'm sure our Marine crew would find it interesting, enjoyable and a worthwhile history. It's a piece of Corps history that I believe is quite rare." Mr. Thomas Faught, Past Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Research, Engineering and Systems) and Marine Officer "The lessons learned from this book are timeless. They apply to those in uniform today and tomorrow. There are few new lessons of expeditionary warfare to learn, even in the 21st century." Lieutenant Colonel Mike Janay, USMC, Retired "This book is about the first colonial Marines. One of the officers had a brother who became a great leader in our nation. A good book to read for Marines." Mr. Jerry Knitis, Marine About the Author Lee Offen is a retired U.S. Army Major who resides in Springfield Virginia.
