About Wild West Women: Travellers, Adventurers And Rebels

Product Description Awarded the 2001 Van City Book Prize, this book proves how the west was really won - through the strength and determination of women. From the Publisher Lillian Alling couldn't bear to live in New York any longer, but she couldn't save the fare home to Russia either. So she decided to walk home via the United States, British Columbia, Alaska, and Siberia. Nothing could stop her—not the enormous distance, not the dangers, not even a jail term. Lillian's is just one of the compelling stories in Rosemary Neering's look at the history of the West from a woman's perspective. Wild West Women features women from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, such as madams who came to mine the miners, prospectors who were still checking on their claims when they were in their eighties, and writers who first feared and then loved the wilderness. Emily Carr, Frances Macnab, Agnes Deans Cameron, and Ma Murray are just some of the independent and determined women profiled in this book through stories, anecdotes, and black and white archival images. Rosemary Neering is the author of a number of books, including A Traveller's Guide to Historic BC, Down the Road: Journeys through Small-Town British Columbia, Over Canada, and Vancouver Island from the Air, as well as many magazine articles on history and the environment. About the Author Rosemary Neering is the award-winning author of countless books on history and travel in Canada, including works on Canadian women and Canadian pioneers. Although Rosemary was born in England, she grew up in Brantford, Ontario, and moved to British Columbia at the age of nineteen. Rosemary enjoys traveling throughout Canada, Europe and South America. When she's at home in Victoria, she likes gardening, playing tennis and spending time with her cat Cayambe.
