About Vermonia #2: Call Of The Winged Panther

Product Description The epic quest to save Vermonia continues! Four friends set out to find their true warrior spirits in a graphic tale featuring fabulous manga artwork. Doug, Jim, and Naomi continue their quest to save their friend Mel and the world of Vermonia from the clutches of evil General Uro. After defeating Sassella, the Stone Monster who turns everything she touches to stone, the three friends, along with the help of Rainbow and Fly, journey to the Telaam village. Meanwhile, Jim must answer the call of his spirit guide and protector, Suiran, the Winged Panther, by defeating the sea monster Ickhaby. Once released from his spell, Suiran grants Jim his protection and his powers of flight through the gift of a charmed bracelet. The friends reunite in the village of the Telaam, where the Seer Hanata, keeper of the Vermonia tarot cards, divines the future fate of the four young warriors from Blue Star and predicts a difficult yet promising path to rescuing Mel and returning Vermonia to the peaceful rule of Queen Frasinella. From School Library Journal Grade 4 Up—In the first book in this series, Mel was kidnapped by evil General Uro and his forces. He turned against his queen and fought against Mel's friends—Doug, Naomi, and Jim—to keep her imprisoned. In this volume, the three skateboarding friends must continue in their quest to free Mel and liberate the imprisoned warrior spirits that travel with each of them. Doug must battle with Sassella, the Stone Monster, but when he defeats her with compassion instead of vengeance, he awakens his warrior spirit, the silver tiger, who can help him continue on. It is this lesson that the three friends take with them as they continue their quest. Jim soon meets his warrior spirit, the winged panther; he is imprisoned beneath the sea, and Jim must free him to receive his help. As they travel, they discover that they are to be the ones to save the world of Vermonia. Violence is minimal, and the story, up until this point, shows that integrity and compassion can go a long way toward surviving a warrior's journey.— Traci Glass, Eugene Public Library, OR (c) Copyright 2010. From Booklist Doug, Jim, and Naomi continue their quest to rescue their friend Mel as they journey through the mysterious world of Vermonia. They repeatedly come up against the forces of General Uro, who is trying to prevent them from bonding with their warrior spirit guides. With a strong plot and an even flow, the second volume of Vermonia shows that manga group YoYo has found its sea legs. The mystical nature of the Vermonians is an obvious take on Native American cultures, but the plucky characters keep things from becoming overly New Agey. Refreshingly for a manga title, the characters are on the low end of adolescence, which is reflected in their crushes and anxieties, and although there is some violence, it isn’t beyond the appropriate level for the intended age range. The artwork is finely detailed and effectively gives the fantasy setting depth, and although it is pretty enough to catch the eyes of girls, it isn’t too flowery for boys. The combination of action, manga, and fantasy, along with the younger age of the characters, will make this a hit with a wide audience. Grades 4-7. --Snow Wildsmith About the Author YOYO is a cutting-edge Japanese manga studio created by recent graduates of the Nihon Kogahuin College department of animation, including lead artist Saki Uchida. Vermonia is Yoyo’s first published series.
