That was the situation I was in when I fitted programmable engine management to one of my cars. The system came without a start map - I was on my own, tuning from absolute scratch. Making it easier for me is that over the years, working as a technical automotive journalist, I've been lucky enough to sit in on many tuning sessions of top engine management tuners. I've also previously written books on engine management systems and their modification. But when I sat down to map a complete engine management system from scratch, I soon realised that nothing I'd previously written - nor anything else I could lay my hands on - really described the step-by-step of the process. Especially, doing it all on the road without a dyno in sight. This book is the result of what I found out, mixed with the theoretical background you need to have if you're to make the right tuning decisions. It is deliberately a short book (62 pages), concentrating on just what you need to know. About the Author Julian Edgar started his working life freelancing for photography magazines. He then worked as a secondary school teacher for eight years, teaching senior humanities, before leaving teaching and becoming a full-time automotive writer. He edited a national Australian automotive print magazine before becoming editor of AutoSpeed, an online car magazine. Along the way he wrote extensively for Silicon Chip, an electronics hobbyist magazine, while contributing articles to technical and automotive publications in Australia, the UK and the US. He has fitted and tuned programmable management, working solely from a home workshop. He has also used plug-in programmable ECUs and interceptors, and has been instrumental in developing electronic car modification products and kits.
