Product description SHIPWRECKED! After their perilous encounter with the sea-witches, Walker and the pirate crew of the Jacklight find refuge on a deserted island. But it might not be as deserted as it seems―shadowy creatures have been spotted in the jungle, and strange animal tracks appear overnight. When Walker, Shiv, and Genoa discover a secret passage and mysterious ruins, the dark history of the archipelago begins to unravel. Legend tells of a mad king, a fallen civilization, and a powerful royal family in search of their lost sister. And for reasons Walker can’t understand, Genoa seems to be at the center of it all. In this triumphant follow-up in the epic Unsinkable Walker Bean graphic novel series, Aaron Renier is back with more breathtaking art and high-sea adventure, The Unsinkable Walker Bean and the Knights of the Waxing Moon. From School Library Journal Gr 5–8—In The Unsinkable Walker Bean, Walker was stranded on a mysterious archipelago, and though he made strong friends in Shiv and Genoa aboard the pirate ship Jacklight, he had more questions than answers ahead of him. Six months after they arrived on the island, the Jacklight is slowly being rebuilt, the crew are finding a way to function without their now-deceased captain, and Genoa sleeps through the day, haunted by the events of the first entry. As things start to look up for Walker and his friends, he discovers not one but two sets of strange ruins on the island, and Genoa is drawn to the mystery of Atlantis. Renier continues his deftly plotted, deliciously illustrated epic. This second volume leans more into mystery; this journey sees him unraveling more complex riddles. Readers unfamiliar with the first installment will be lost, despite the brief recap at the beginning. The artwork often suggests a levity that the story line does not follow; the dense plot and genuinely worrisome challenges facing Walker will deter very young readers drawn in by the bright colors and gorgeous scenery. VERDICT A strong recommendation for libraries where Walker Bean's first outing is popular.–Matisse Mozer, Los Angeles Public Library Review “Aaron Renier creates worlds that are so convincing and immersive that his readers are forever transformed. Walker Bean is a worthy heir to Tintin and deserves―and will not disappoint―a similarly wide audience.”―Dave Eggers, cofounder of 826 National and author of The Lifters"[Renier's] worldbuilding is intricate and immersive...Stunning illustrations should easily compel young eyes to linger over the many tidy and small panels juxtaposed against alluring larger spreads...Dazzling." ―Kirkus, starred review"Renier continues his deftly plotted, deliciously illustrated epic. This second volume leans more into mystery; this journey sees him unraveling more complex riddles." ―School Library Journal About the Author Aaron Renier is the Eisner award–winning author of Spiral-Bound and The Unsinkable Walker Bean, and one of the creative forces behind Infinite Corpse, an online collaborative comic with hundreds of contributors.
