About The Nestomir: Part I: Strange Landings

Learn to Code Through an Authentic Science Fiction Story The Nestomir is a science fiction series that introduces kids and young adults to coding & other tricky engineering topics. It tells the tale of Jake Addison, a troubled adolescent, from Grapefield, Wisconsin, who struggles to live up to the stratospheric academic success of his father and grandfather. But everything changes one day when a wrong turn crosses Jake’s path with a learning obsessed special forces soldier from a distant galaxy known as The Nestomir. A REVOLUTIONARY LEARNING EXPERIENCE. It's an entirely new way to learn coding & engineering – woven into the story are teachings taken from The Nestomir Galaxy’s study of The Utma, the mysterious force holding The Nestomir, and all of us, together. Lessons in Part I: Strange Landings focus on CODE. From creating Python functions, the magic of the open-source ecosystem, to understanding the essence of data... the story offers critical lessons intentionally focused on coding topics that often confuse first time learners. Note, our objective is not to offer a comprehensive computer science curriculum...although this series will cover many critical engineering and coding topics from a very unique angle! Some other key topics taught in the story Reusability & code efficiency Data structures (realistic use cases for employing data structures) The Jupyter Notebook Control flow in Python (allowing our programs to make decisions) The Internet and the Python requests library The power of Functions Working with the wealth of opportunities that the Python open source ecosystem provides us These lessons designed by a team of engineers, writers, and scientists who took their own life-learning experiences to create the technical lessons in this story. "We retain knowledge through stories ~25x more effectively than through other learning methods. The Nestomir is a great example of this phenomenon." - John Rodrigues, STEM Educator, Beta Reader, California "This is a novel for adolescents & young adults. It's not a picture book for toddlers. We aren't replicating existing coding courses either–we're providing you with an entirely new learning ideology...and we're looking at engineering from a completely different perspective. From Robloxers to art lovers - all should benefit." - Steven Reubenstone, Author, Engineer More on The Story Part I: Strange Landings follows Jake Addison through a series of adventures that span from breaking into a secret laboratory in North America all the way to Python-training in a Nestomirian dojo in Casablanca. On these escapades Jake is introduced to coding, combat, and the learning philosophies that drive Nestomirian culture. After fighting off alien foes, and meeting interesting contacts from across the universe, including Dendro, a Solar Forces warrior, Jake is transformed; he has an entirely new perspective on how to live life and how to think about learning. FAQ Why did we create The Nestomir? The future of learning is about working with our brain, not working against it. If we can absorb complex stories so well, even as children, then why not use stories to understand something simpler than the story itself, like math, coding, and engineering? This question was the inspiration for The Nestomir. We want to use the power of storytelling to teach. Do I need to care about coding to read this story? Absolutely not. Coding is an important topic in 2021, we stand by that. But our intention is not to force anyone to code. Our intention is enlighten kids as to how code will be applicable to all industries (and passions), in the future.
