The name is derived from the Halkomelem word “Sésquac,” belonging to indigenous tribes in British Columbia, and means “wild man.” These two regions are home to the greatest number of documented Sasquatch sightings in the world. According to legend, this “wild man” stands between 7 and 10 feet tall at a weight of over 500 pounds. While his existence is the subject of debate, the hunt for this mysterious creature has caught the hearts of Americans for over a hundred years. The nickname “Bigfoot” came about in 1958 when a Californian named Gerald Crew was featured in the news to showcase a cast he made of a footprint that he found that many believed belonged to Sasquatch. After that big footprint was found, the nickname “Bigfoot” spread like wildfire and got recognition when the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization was formed.
