St. Luke the Evangelist is the patron saint of physicians, artists, brewers, butchers, painters and glass workers. An early Christian, he is said by tradition to be the author of both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Based on his accurate description of towns, islands, as well as correctly naming various official titles, archaeologist Sir William Ramsay wrote that "Luke is a historian of the first rank…” Luke was trained as a physician before becoming a disciple of the apostles. One early source says he died of natural causes at age 84 in Boeatia, while another legend says that Luke was martyred by idolatrous priests in Greece by being hanged from an olive tree.
