Eri Yamamoto moved to New York from Kyoto in 1995. After hearing Tommy Flanagan perform in Central Park, the classically trained piano prodigy had a momentous revelation that her future would be with jazz music. She entered the prestigious jazz program at the New School and began playing regularly at the Avenue B Social Club, a popular spot among jazz musicians in the East Village. It was there that she deeply impressed Matthew Shipp (who recorded her last trio album on his Blue Series/ Thirsty Ear) and William Parker (who recently invited her into his Raining on the Moon ensemble). Her growth as a jazz player and composer over the last 10 years is truly phenomenal. AUM Fidelity quickly recorded two albums with her in early 2008, the first of which was the exquisite Duologue, released in June. The second, Redwoods, features her regular working trio of longtime compatriots David Ambrosio and Ikuo Takeuch. Yamamoto s distinctly invigorating approach to the jazz trio, and her remarkable gift for indelible melodies, reaches yet another track-for-track high.
