Product Description Get ready to be bedazzled! Dana Simpson's Phoebe and Her Unicorn is back with more sparkles than ever! In this fourth volume of the series, join in the adventure as Phoebe and Marigold confront messy rooms, trouble at school, and a nasty case of “Sparkle Fever.” Follow the pair back to Camp Wolfgang, where their old pals Sue (a.k.a. “Monster Girl”) and Ringo, the lake creature, remind them that being weird is WAY more fun than being normal. From School Library Journal Gr 3–5—Phoebe and Marigold Heavenly Nostrils navigate Thanksgiving, Christmas, the common cold, and summer camp in this new collection of the comic strip. Each one-page strip is comprised of three or four panels and stands alone: all end with a clear punch line. However, readers may comfortably read the book straight through for a continual narrative. Children will enjoy the simple layout and full-color cartoon illustrations, particularly those of eternally elegant Marigold. The humor and vocabulary are quite sophisticated; a glossary defines words such as context and prescient. Many of the strips end with a dry comment on vanity, friendship, or, at one point, copyright. Even if these ideas or references don't completely sink in, children should appreciate encounters with a goblin and a lake monster and the gags inherent in the contrast between down-to-earth Phoebe and her unlikely best friend, a magnificent, vain, loving unicorn. There are lots of sparkles, too. VERDICT Appealing art, strong characters, and sharp humor make this a volume both children and parents will read with pleasure.—Lisa Goldstein, Brooklyn Public Library Review “Simpson easily straddles the line between kid and adult humor—another way in which these books recall the heyday of Calvin and Hobbes—and as I read this to my daughter over a series of bedtimes, we both laughed aloud many times.” (Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing) "...my favorite book of the year..." (Damon Caporaso, BSC Kids) “If there’s still a hole in your comics-reading life where Calvin & Hobbes used to go, you may find that Phoebe and Her Unicorn helps fill that hole, at least a little.” (GeekDad) About the Author Dana Claire Simpson grew up in Gig Harbor, Washington, drawing the entire time. She eventually graduated from The Evergreen State College, despite having spent all her time drawing, and not always for credit. From 1998 to 2008, she drew the internet comic strip Ozy and Millie. After winning the Amazon-sponsored Comic Strip Superstar Contest in 2009, Andrews McMeel Syndication signed her to a development deal for Heavenly Nostrils, which was later renamed Phoebe and Her Unicorn. She currently lives in Santa Barbara, California, with her tech genius spouse and her fairly stupid cat.
