After earning a degree in the social sciences, he founded a multiples publisher together with two partners, produced documentary films for Bavaria München, and worked as adviser for education and training for the Bayerische Architektenkammer (Bavarian Chamber of Architects) beginning in 1973. In 1977 he took over the leadership of Vitra. He began to internationalize the firm, formed relationships with the leading authors in the field of design, commissioned works from some of the world’s most important architects, and founded the Vitra Design Museum. Cornel Windlin has been responsible for conceiving and designing Vitra’s home catalogues since 2004. Since 1993 he has run his own studio in Zurich. He is well-known for his work for the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich (Museum of Design Zurich), the Schauspielhaus Zürich (Zurich Playhouse) under the direction of Christoph Marthaler, the Tate museums in London, and other institutions. Many of his book and poster designs have received national and international awards.
