Preservation Solutions - Pentacryl - Green Wood Stabilizer Carving, turning, or working with green wood, in general, is often faster and easier than dried stock. However, air drying can leave green wood susceptible to damage such as cracking, splitting, and warping as it dries. Introducing Pentacryl! A revolutionary non-hazardous compound of modified polymers, this green wood stabilizer is designed to significantly reduce the cracking and splitting of green wood as it dries – preserving the integrity of your wood. Excellent results have been achieved with many types of wood including soft woods, hardwoods, fruit wood and exotic wood – including bamboo. How Does it Work? Green or fresh cut wood has a high moisture content. Pentacryl works by displacing this moisture—pushing the free water out and leaving a thin coating on the capillary and wood cell walls. As the wood dries, this prevents the cells from shrinking, preventing the cracking, checking, warping, and irregular drying you get with green wood. Unlike a wax sealer which just seals the end grain of the wood, Pentacryl will penetrate all the way into the wood to stabilize it. Pentacryl works best on wood with a 25-30% moisture content or higher. If your wood has a lower moisture content, between 15-25%, we recommend treating it with Wood Juice. A stabilizer like Pentacryl, but formulated to treat semi-dry wood and prevent future cracking. 3 Key Points to Using Pentacryl Successfully 1. Treat the wood right after cutting it 2. Completely saturate the wood with Pentacryl 3. Dry the wood slowlyFinishing the WoodPentacryl will not react with tannic acid in the wood and will leave the wood looking clean and natural. The surface can be sanded, stained, glued, wood-burned (pyrography), and/or finishedPentacryl is available in 1 gallon and 1 quart (32 oz) sizes.
