About Palmetto 1585 Series Carbon With Graphite Coating

This Palmetto style 1585 carbon compression packing seal with a graphite coating protects pumps and valves from fluid leaks in high-speed, high-temperature applications. The interwoven braided packing seal is made of 95-percent assay carbon polyacrylonitrile (PAN) staple yarn, which absorbs and retains wet and dry lubricant for improved sealing and reduced friction and wear on the shaft or stem. It also exhibits high tensile strength, thermal conductivity, and resistance to abrasive media and harsh chemicals. Its low coefficient of friction reduces wear on the shaft. The carbon fibers are coated with graphite to increase the transfer of frictional heat away from the shaft, permitting high shaft speeds and reducing the chance of leakage. This packing seal is compatible with media in a wide pH range of 1-14, except for strong oxidizers in the 1-2 pH range, such as oleum, fluorine, and fuming nitric acid. It has a maximum pressure limit of 3,500 pounds per square inch (psi), a pressure-velocity (PV) factor of 800,000, and a shaft speed of 4,400 feet per minute (fpm). This high temperature packing seal operates to a maximum temperature of 1,200 degrees F (650 degrees C) in steam and 650 degrees F (343 degrees C) in oxidizing atmospheres. Style 1585 is suitable for use in high-speed pumps, furnace gaskets, blowers, driers, high-temperature valves, and as anti-extrusion rings with style 4010AF for extended life in boiler feed, condensate pumps, and turbines. Specifications Maximum temperature in oxidizing atmospheres 650 degrees F (343 degrees C) Maximum temperature in steam 1,200 degrees F (650 degrees C) PH range 1-14, except strong oxidizers in the 1-2 pH range Pressure limit 3,500 psi (241 bar) PV fac
