Thyme is an herb from the mint family which has been used for centuries for a wide range of different purposes. Many who are familiar with thyme recognize it as an herb sometimes used in the kitchen as a seasoning, especially part of the famous French herb blend herbes de Provence. As it is native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean, it also played a historic role in various cultures. The Greeks and Romans burned thyme as incense in their temples to cleanse the air. European folklore associated thyme with strength and courage, leading medieval ladies to embroider sprigs of thyme into tokens given to knights. Naturally, this savory herb can also be used to brew an aromatic cup of tea.
