About this item: Irene Ruiz masters the millenary weaving traditions developed by the ancient Zapotec people for the creation of her original rug. She starts by rinsing the newly shorn wool with amole, a local plant, to preserve its luster. Ruiz also prepares her palette of colors with natural dyes such as cochineal for red, indigo for blue and walnut for brown. She weaves the rug on a pedal loom and finishes the fringe by hand. - All natural dyes - Dry clean or hand wash in cold water - Keep out of the sun About our Artist: 'I grew up in Teotitlan del Valle, home of the legendary Zapotec rugs,' says Irene Ruiz. 'I wasn't able to finish school due to financial difficulties. I don't use any chemicals because I want to contribute to the preservation of the environment. I make colors from leaves, seeds and flowers to dye the virgin wool.'
