Woodworking lathes are the oldest variety. An adjustable horizontal metal rail - the tool rest - between the material and the operator accommodates the positioning of shaping tools, which are usually hand-held. With wood, it is common practice to press and slide sandpaper against the still-spinning object after shaping to smooth the surface made with the metal shaping tools.Headstock, Tailstock, foot, tool rest base and toll rest are constructed of heavy steel tubing. The outboard end of the drive spindle can also be used for large turning. The pulley system and motor are mounted to the headstock. The tailstock slides along the full length of the bed and clamps positively at any distance from the drive spindle.
