Product Description Mormon Philosophy Simplified takes a readable approach to the foundational underpinnings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Accessible for members of the Church and non-members alike, this book takes classic questions in philosophy and provides responses based on the philosophical teachings of Joseph Smith, LDS scholars, and modern Mormon thinkers. There is a huge gap between the colorful world of Mormon academia and the average member, to the point that the two groups have difficulties engaging with one another. So while most books on Mormon thought rotate around complex Mormon history and require a high academic background, this book exists as a bridge allowing anyone the tools, background, context, detail, and permission to think deeply about the most existential questions we are all faced with. In Mormon culture, we find a sort of caricature of Mormon fundamentalism, but in Mormon thought, we find philosophical gems from the late teaching of Joseph Smith, expanded by the Pratt Brothers, and organized by scholars James E. Talmage and B.H. Roberts. Readers will enjoy exploring the depths of Mormon theology not addressed in modern-day manuals or press releases and will be surprised at what Mormonism has to offer when asking such questions as what is the nature of God, how powerful is God, when does life begin, why do things exist, why does evil exist, what is beauty, what is right and wrong and how can we distinguish between the two, how do we learn, what is the nature of the universe, what is the nature of eternal relationships, what is sin, how much free will we have, what is the nature of man, and other such questions that have kept man from proper sleep since the beginning of time. It outlines as simply as possible how Mormonism would respond if it were a student in a Philosophy 101 class. This book presents an entire philosophical system from top to bottom for anyone wanting to better understand the metaphysical foundation of Mormonism. The result is an invitation for all of us to evaluate our own personal philosophies and live an examined life worth living. Philosophy is a study of the good life, and we all need a little bit more good in our lives. Review Brittney Hartley wonderfully succeeds in presenting philosophy and Mormon sensibilities about classic questions in a simplified way, but in no way is her mind and grasp of issues simple. In fact, it takes wide reading and deep thinking to even approach the level of skill it takes to distill perennial questions so well, and to express such affection for the journey philosophy can take us on. I am grateful for Mormon Philosophy Simplified. I learned a great deal from it, and I am still chewing on much more! -- Dan Wotherspoon, Ph.D. Philosophy of Religion and Theology, Claremont Graduate University, Host of Latter-day Faith Podcast; Board member of the Society for Mormon Philosophy and Theology Philosophy poses the fundamental questions of existence and theology explores ways of answering them in the light of revelation from God. In her book, Brittney Hartley shows how philosophy can help us in our quest to understand the deep questions of life. She explains important philosophical concepts in easy to understand ways and shows how these concepts have been used in Mormon theology. This is an excellent primer for those just beginning to explore these questions and a good refresher course for more advanced students of theology. -- Janice Allred, independent scholar and author of God the Mother and other Theological Essays In her slim and succinct volume Brittney Hartley delivers exactly what she promises--Mormon Philosophy Simplified. In a day of faith crises and growing pushback to organized religion, her book offers readers an opportunity to pause and reflect on those "classic" concepts and teachings that make the life of faith and of church participation relevant and engaging. -- David D.
