Preparing mate in the Milltown Merchants Mate Cup is easy. Fill the gourd with the desired amount of mate and then cover the top of the gourd with your hand. Hold the gourd sideways and shake until the mate is completely on one side. While keeping the gourd slightly tilted, place the bombilla (filtered straw) into the gourd. The filtered straw goes in the bottom of the gourd on the side where there is no mate. While keeping the gourd slightly tilted, add a small amount of cold water to the gourd and let the mate absorb the cold water. You can now hold the gourd upright and add hot water. Drink until the cup is empty. You can refill the cup with hot water 10 to 15 times before needing to change out the mate. If the gourd is too hot to hold, then you have added water that is too hot to drink. Water that is too hot will not only burn you when you drink it, but will make the mate bitter. Make sure the hot water being added is 150 degrees or less so that the gourd is a comfortable temperature in your hand.
