Born in New York City, he was educated at Wesleyan University and Mount Union College in Ohio. Freeman entered the Methodist ministry and became assistant editor of various Sunday-school and tract publications of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1872. In addition to Handbook of Bible Manners and Customs, he wrote Use of Illustration in Sunday School Teaching and A Story History of the English Bible. Freeman also wrote several books for children under the pseudonym of “Robin Ranger.”
