"These flags can be found in the territory of the Tibetan cultural area, in the Himalayas including the entire Tibetan plateau and partly also in the adjacent regions, at each mountain pass and on each summit. They usually have the order of from left to right or in the case of star-shaped flags hanging from inside to outside the colors blue, white, red, green and yellow. The number five plays a central role in Tibetan Buddhism and embodies the four directions and the center. The colors stand for one element each, blue for the void (the room, the sky), white for the air (the clouds, the wind), red for the fire, green for the water and yellow for the earth element. They are exposed by the faithful to the full weathering the wind, so that they believe the prayers are carried to heaven.
