Top Grain is the actual surface of the cowhide. While no one knows the actual number, a small percentage of furniture sold today is upholstered in Premium Top Grain Aniline leather. Some claim as low as 5%. Aniline dying describes one of the two processes in which color is applied to the leather with the dye penetrating the leather and extending beyond the surface, into the leather itself. For modern furniture requiring a clean aesthetic, Top Grain Aniline Leather is both "liquid vat" (deep penetrating) and surface dyed to achieve the main color selection and to conceal uneven tones and blemishes in the hide. Top grain aniline is the softest leather and naturally breaths well. Because Top Grain refers to the actual surface of the animal hide it presents a natural leather appearance you would expect. This topical layer contains the color that the leather will be. Hans J. Wegner was born April 2nd 1914 and passed on January 26th, 2007. Hans grew up in southern Denmark and early on made a profession in wood cabinet making. He developed an affinity toward crafting with natural wood. Later in life, he became part of the Copenhagen Carpenters guild and began attending furniture exhibits. Wegner will likely be remembered for his contributions toward Modern Danish Furniture Design. For Hans, this design would start with wooden chairs in his early years. Later he would use a combination of wood and fabrics in his designs, a good example being the Shell Chair. In 1960, he released in limited production the CH445 Hans J Wegner Wing Chair. The wing chair featured a solid wooden frame however it was covered with full upholstery in both leather and fabric. Hans received more than a few awards. In 1951, he took the Lunning prize and Gran Prix of Milan. In 1959, he was awarded Royal Designer by the Royal Society of Arts in London. He made several of what are now considered his famous quotes with regards his furniture designs. “The good chair is a task one is never completely done with” and “We must take care that everything does not get so dreadfully serious. We must play but we must play seriously” are two of his well known. His most sought after design is likely the Papa Bear series also referred to as the Teddy Bear series.
