In 2012 the purple coneflower was designated one of Tennessee's official state wildflowers. At one time, the flower was thought to be extinct but in the 1960's the flower was discovered in Middle Tennessee along the limestone and cedar glades. In 1979 was one of the first plants to be considered endangered by the United States. The cover of this journal was designed and painted by Rose Elaine. She captures the profound contrast between the complementary colors orange and purple and with pen and paint celebrates the flower's continued growth. In 2011 the Purple coneflower was removed from the endangered list.
