The Jancy Slugger uncoated, carbide-tipped high-speed steel annular cutter with 1” depth and a 1/2” round shank with flats is used to create through holes as deep as 1” in a range of materials, with best performance in hard-to-machine materials as well as mild steel and stainless steel. An annular cutter removes only the circumference of a through hole (extending through the workpiece), releasing the central material as a slug when the hole has been cut. This tool has a built-in twist drill bit that helps to anchor the cutter and assists with ejection of the slug when it is released. The center-free design of the tool results in energy efficiency and reduced cycle time: the operator can produce holes three to five times faster than with a conventional twist drill that must convert the entire hole into chips. In addition, this tool’s multiple cutting edges can create an accurate, burr-free hole that minimizes the need for secondary operations such as pre-drilling and reaming. High-speed steel (HSS) is a common general-purpose steel for cutting tools and is compatible with a variety of materials. With no coating or surface treatment, this uncoated tool can be used on a broad range of materials and provides an economical alternative to coated tools. Carbide edges add cutting strength to the tool body; carbide is harder than high-speed or cobalt steel, making it more wear-resistant at high speeds and providing longer tool life. This tool’s 1/2” shank with flats is suitable for use in a hand drill as well as in a drill press, mill, or lathe. In this Jancy tool series, annular cutters can create holes of various diameters with a depth of cut as great as 1”. Annular cutters are hollow drill bits that cut only the periphery of a hole, reducing the torque and horsepower requirements for drilling in many applications. Because they remove less material than standard twist drill bits, they have faster cutting speeds and use less energy in comparis
