Instrumental Gems of the Fifties rounds up 40 hits, some of which are otherwise difficult to find on CD. Although most of the tracks are orchestral hits, the inclusion of Ernie Freeman's "Raunchy" and Santo & Johnny's "Sleepwalk" add variety and a little context, considering that many of these orchestral intrumentals coexisted and competed with rock & roll records on the charts. At least in part, this package documents a side of the '50s music scene that is nearly forgotten, considering that rock & roll often dominates any discussion of the era's pop music. Compiled and annotated by the late Bob Hyde and cross licensed from multiple labels, Instrumental Gems of the Fifties is a treasure chest of classic and historic recordings. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide
