The myth surrounding the city of El Dorado was created after many reports of some Spanish conquerors who spoke of a funeral ceremony in which the body of a native, usually the deceased chief of the tribe, was placed on a wooden board ornamented with hammered gold leaf, which in turn contains large amounts of this metal and many emeralds placed in bowls alongside lesser materials which are nonetheless very much appreciated by the passed and his tribesmen, such as pottery work. The aforementioned wooden board is set to float in a lake surrounded by thick groves that provide a natural defense against uninvited foreigners while the rite takes place. The chief's own body is covered with pounded gold leaf too before being finally delivered to the waters, where it finally sinks, disappearing along with its riches. The name El Dorado means “The Golden One”, alluding to the deceased golden man. This peculiar procedure immediately attracted the attention of many Europeans, who hoped to find large amounts of gold and precious stones at the bottom of the lake after a drainage process. Both the gold and precious stones remain, by virtue of their nobility, physically unaltered, and constitute by themselves a splendid treasure to pursue.
