If you're anything like us, your "mountain" shoes quickly take over as your 'cross shoes, then your "gravel" shoes, and then, finally, your road shoes. Sure, there are benefits to a road-specific shoe, but as more and more of us use our road bikes on less and less well-maintained roads, a shoe with a little bit of tread on the bottom is nice to have. The Giro Code VR70s are ideal for this slow takeover of two-hole cleats. At their base is an EC70 sole with Vibram (yes, that Vibram) tread over it. You get the best of both worlds: a shoe that's stiff and transfers power very well, and a shoe that allows you to walk around a bit without destroying your cleats, or slipping on rocks. They close with a classic buckle/hook-and-loop strap combo, and are quite easy to adjust on the fly. Giro's also included the SuperNatural Fit Kit, an insole system designed to help you get the best fit possible from your shoes.
