Nickel plated steel pot with neodymium (rare earth) magnet, supplied with bolt and nut. Neodymium magnets are the strongest magnets available. Neodymium material itself is brittle and has poor corrosion resistance so it is usually coated or used as part of a magnetic assembly, such as this, where the neodymium material is contained in a metal "pot". They are best used where space is at a premium or a very high level of magnetism is required. Alnico or ceramic magnetics are a more cost-effective alternative if the strength to size ratio is not critical. Neodymium magnets operate at a relatively low operating temperature (120 degrees C) vs alnico and ceramic magnets.
