This Field Notes cover is handmade in Washington from US materials. The whole process from design, cutting, stitching, packing, and shipping occurs in our leather studio in outskirts of Seattle, WA. The leather we use is sourced from Wickett & Craig that is one of the last standing American tanneries in business for over 150 years. We use vegetable-tanned leather that is traditional method of tanning leather using tree bark and organics that will make the leather durable and strong, and allow it to age beautifully over time by creating a unique patina. The full-grain leather that we use in making this item is the outermost layer of cowhide that has all the textures and characteristics and is not to be confused with "genuine leather" that is the term mass production industry uses for bonded leather made out of residues and leftover pieces- think wood vs. MDF. To maintain our leather, all you need is some olive oil. As leather is used, it loses its oil contents and becomes stiffer over time. All you need to do is rub olive oil on the leather using a cloth and let it dry. Olive oil is by far the best natural conditioner for full grain vegetable tanned leather.
