The coat of the Shetland ponies in summer is short and glossy. In winter it is very long, since they let their "winter coat" grow. This provides additional protection from the cold. Originally it came from the Shetland islands and was used for mining. Shetland ponies are the ideal partner for learning how to handle horses in a playful way. They also have their own will and some are very stubborn. These horses eat plants. They like fresh food, but also eat pressed concentrated feed. Typical food items include hay, carrots, fruit, grass, Oats and Barley. They drink up to 40 liters of water per day.
