The 2.5 inch wide strap distributes the purse weight so it can be worn comfortably across the body or over the shoulder. This is especially important if using it to carry heavy items like books. The strap drops 23 inches from the shoulder to the top of the bag. The lightweight cotton allows you to knot the strap if you would like a shorter length.
