About Before Gulfport: It Wasn't Always Called

Product Description Life was hard in central Florida after the Civil War. Families migrated there from the war-ravaged states to the north with few possessions and even less money. They settled on farms and labored to raise produce, cattle and chickens. This story is about a young man and woman who faced the daunting tasks with courage and resolve. While living in a tent they built a life that included birthing three children. In time the family of five moved to the west coast of Florida where land was cheap. They cut down trees, dug out roots, plowed and composted the soil; just as they had been doing for the past 15 years on another man's land. The children grew, married, and had their own children. Between 1885 and 1910 they faced many difficult and dangerous situations. Not everyone survived. This is their story - Book one of the Gulfport Series. About the Author Tom Raif is an aspiring author living in Gulfport, Florida and his first book, "Before Gulfport", follows the life of a family of five who move to the area in 1885. At that time there was virgin timber, bountiful fishing, poor soil, and wild animals to contend with. Mr. Raif has a degree in Liberal Arts from Colgate University and worked in the computer field for over 30 years before retiring in 2016. He lived in the Caribbean for 9 years and in Florida for the past 27 years. He intends to write additional historical fiction books and short stories.
