About At Play In The Garden Of Stitch: Thoughts That Come

Product Description Stitching adds depth and texture to the artist's toolbox. This book provides new ways to think about how stitch can bring depth to composition, texture to emotions and line to ideas. Kovarik approaches free-motion stitching in a way that is approachable, fun and many layered. In addition to simple stitching and drawing exercises Kovarik shares examples and inspirations for how to approach this art form. Kovarik's award-winning art quilts illustrate her techniques and clarify her process. Close-up photos of stitching will inspire readers to try their hand at these techniques. "Let your creativity out to play. This book shows step-by-step how you can use Paula's approach and techniques to create your own exciting art." Martha Sielman, Executive Director, Studio Art Quilt Associates. Review Let your creativity out to play. This book shows step-by-step how you can use Paula's approach and techniques to create your own quirky, wonderful and exciting art. - Martha Sielman, Executive Director, Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. Paula taught me that machine stitching can be more than a method of connecting layers with quilting patterns. It can become the primary technique for creating design elements in my work. Using stitch more creatively has helped me to make my work more complex and interesting. - Diane Melms, artist Paula's teaching practice demonstrates a sense of rhythm and freedom using free-motion stitching which is both unique and compelling. Now I am able to interpret some of my favorite drawing techniques into art quilts. - Linda Chase, President, Board of Directors, Visions Art Museum: Contemporary Quilts + Textiles, San Diego, CA About the Author After thirty years as a graphic designer Paula Kovarik has time now to pursue her art. Expressing herself through the medium of fabric and thread Kovarik explores what cannot be seen. Her intuitive line work travels the surface of her work as if a meditation has become solid. Inspired by everything from cracks in sidewalks to electronic circuitry and microscopic life she layers meaning and emotion into each piece. The tactile nature of the cloth and thread makes the work approachable and mysterious at the same time. It's about the layered, ripped, cut, and sandwiched together pieces-producing a composition held together by the narrative of the thread. Inward thoughts become outwardly apparent through slow and studied attention to detail. Kovarik's award-winning fiber art has been recognized by several national venues including Quilt National, Quilts=Art=Quilts, ArtQuilt Elements, World of Threads, FiberArt Now Excellence in Fibers and Visions. She has been profiled in American Craft, FiberArt Now and Art Quilting Studio magazines. Her work is featured in Art Quilts Unfolding - 50 Years of Innovation by Sandra Sider, Nancy Bavor, Lisa Ellis and Martha Sielman and Art Quilts International Abstract & Geometric by Martha Sielman. Paula lives and works in Memphis, TN. She is a full-time artist and fiber art workshop teacher. Her work and online journal can be found at paulakovarik.com
