While the colored belts are seemingly synonymous with martial arts, they are actually a relatively new system. They were first developed by Jigoro Kano. He wanted a system to recognize the progress of his students. Interestingly, originally they would use the same belt and simply dye it a new color when a new belt was achieved. This is part of the reason the belts go from lighter to darker in color, as it was easier to redye in a darker color. Typically, the belts go in the following order: White belt, yellow belt, orange belt, purple belt, blue belt, green belt, brown belt, red belt, and black belt. While this is only nine levels of martial arts belts, there is room for a tenth belt in this display case. This is because, depending on the variation of martial arts, some offer a tenth belt. In jiu-jitsu it is sometimes a red and white ceremonial belt, while in some forms they offer markings on the black belt to recognize further achievement.
