About America First: Updated Edition

Product Description This edition of America First has been completely UPDATED AND REVISED for modern readers.  AMERICA FIRST by Lawton Evans has always been my favorite book for elementary American History. The author has such a wonderful narrative style that always keeps students engaged. Unfortunately, the book also contains language and attitudes that are racially insensitive, as it was first published in the early 1900s. I have tried to remedy this so that parents can enjoy reading this book to their children without having to edit as they read it aloud. AMERICA FIRST: UPDATED EDITION includes the following changes: Any language that described Native Americans as savages or blood-thirsty has been removed. The term “Indian” has been replaced with “Native American” or simply, “natives” or "people" in most instances The term “negro” has been replaced with “person” or “citizen,” or, when referring to enslaved peoples prior to or during the Civil War, the term “negro” has been replaced with “slave.” All instances of the term “master” and “marse” have been removed. The term “white men” has been changed to “explorers,” “English colonists,” “colonists,” or simply, “citizens” or “people,” depending on the context. Other updates to the book include restoring dignity to the descriptions of enslaved peoples. Dates have been updated. New illustrations have been added to the original illustrations. I hope you and your children enjoy the updated edition of AMERICA FIRST.   For a complete listing of books and study guides, or for more information regarding the Charlotte Mason method of education, please see THE PLENARY website at CMPLENARY.COM.     Review I Recommend this Book to All Homeschoolers "I recommend this book to all homeschoolers who are looking for a living book about US History, or those who simply want to expand what they were taught (or not taught) as children." Beautifully Set, Easy to Read, All Without Having to Do Clunky Editing of Outdated Language "I use this book as a Charlotte Mason educator with my younger children. Reading the public domain copy was a task as I did edit things, such as 'savages' when talking about Native Americans. The updated version of America First has been exceptionally helpful for me, in that I can read to them without having to edit. We still discuss how Natives were treated, how slaves were treated, and why it's important to see Natives and slaves as PEOPLE - not 'savages' or worse." It's the Little Things that Really Add to the Ease of Using this Book "The book is typeset beautifully, and the illustrations really help my children grasp what is going on in each story. I can hand over the book to older children who can read independently and allow them to read the history as opposed to being caught up in the language of the time. Additionally, the fact that there are years included as opposed '50 years ago' is SO HELPFUL for keeping a timeline. It's the little things that really add to the ease of using this book."
