The Reward Chart by Autism Supplies and Developments is an extremely useful motivating tool to help people to manage their own behaviour. The person first selects the reward that they would like to work towards getting. 12 common rewards are included, though because the board uses hook and loop fastenings it is compatible with your existing symbol library. The person can then begin to earn stars by doing a number of pre-agreed things. This could be behaving in a certain manner, not doing something, or completing a list of tasks. Once they have collected 5 stars, they receive their reward. It is usually best for the person to earn stars, but not lose them for subsequent negative behaviour. Losing them can be extremely demoralising, and can appear to the person to be ‘cancelling out’ their earlier good work. This can lead to them losing faith in the system and becoming unwilling to work towards any further stars. The board itself is A4 in size, meaning that it is easily portable from room to room, and even between different environments (such as home and school), so the person always has their familiar tool with them. It is made from plastic, so it can withstand a great deal in terms of coping with the stressors of daily life. The symbols are 4.5cm squares, also made from plastic, so they are also extremely durable and hardwearing.Designed initially for autistic children, it has been used successfully with a wide age range and also alternative diagnoses such as learning disabilities, ADHD and Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). It has also been used in pre-schools and other early years setting extremely successfully. Being made from plastic means that both the board and symbols are flexible, yet remain strong and extremely durable. This product is part of the Autism Supplies and Developments range of visual communication aids, which were originally designed to help our own autistic son. With over 30 years professional and personal experience being with those on the spectrum, you can be sure that these products are well designed and helpful.
