The Desert People is a poetic story told from fragments of history and culture. A history of a courageous and resourceful nation still standing in the Sonoran Desert after centuries of systemic conflict. After Spanish, Mexican, and American denial of their humanity. After wars of annihilation inflicted upon their villages by neighboring Indian tribes, primarily the Apache. The scars of history have emboldened the Tohono O’odham and are today markers toward a rich future. The People’s culture is essential to their purpose and destiny. From a visionary story of creation to compatible existence among the saguaro cactus and desert creatures. The sanctity of the earth and the blessings of rainfall are core values to lifecycles. The value of a human life and the need to protect it from evil forces are religious beliefs. This book is dedicated to my father, born in the Sonoran Desert of Mexico. He befriended his Tohono O’odham brothers. He participated in their social traditions, such as drinking the sacred tiswin, from fermented saguaro fruit. This current landscape of The Desert People is his legacy.
