Chinese instrument makers have made gongs for thousands of years and are deserving of their reputation of making the best in the world. Many processes go into creating the special sound of a Chinese Gong, including fine toning as a result of hand-hammering. In Buddhism, the gong is sounded at the start and end of each day. In Chinese temples, gongs are struck 108 times because it's believed that sentient beings have 108 types of worries. The teaching is this upon hearing the gong, worries will cease, wisdom will grow. Nothing has the ability to transport us to another time and place quite like the brilliant resonance of a gong. For over a thousand years, gongs of various types have played an important role in both the religious and secular music of many Asian cultures. Gongs were sounded to chase away evil spirits, warn of invading armies, heal the sick and invoke the spirits of the dead. To be touched by a gong was said to bring happiness and strength. Today, this revered instrument of warriors, emperors, princes and priests adds a special aura to any setting. In 1979, the first Woodstock Chime was created by GRAMMY® Award-winning musician Garry Kvistad from an aluminum lawn chair he found in a landfill. As a professional musician and instrument designer, he was fascinated by the Scales of Olympus, a 7th century pentatonic scale that can't be played on a modern piano. Garry had the idea to cut and tune the lawn chair chime tubes to the exact frequency of the ancient scale. The resulting Chimes of Olympus was the first Woodstock Chimes Wind Chimes and is still one of our bestselling wind chimes. Amazon.com Inspired by a blend of traditional and contemporary Asian aesthetics, this gong has a graceful, fluid design. A polished 10-inch brass gong hangs from sweeping arcs of ash wood, and produces a deep-throated harmonic ringing as it is rung by the round, rubber-edged striker. Secured with black nylon strands, the Emperor Gong is weather-resistant, measures 34-1/2 by 13 inches, and, in addition to providing calming wind-music, is useful for signaling the start of dinner or meditation.
