About The Auxilia Of The Roman Imperial Army

The Auxilia of the Roman Imperial Army is a detailed analysis of the foreign auxiliary troops which fought along side the legions and made up more than half of imperial Rome’s immense professional military organization. The author, George Leonard Cheesman concentrates on the period roughly from the time of Augustus to Marcus Aurelius when Rome was at the peak of her power. G. L. Cheesman (1884-1915) was a historian and Fellow of New College, Oxford. Serving as a Lieutenant in the First World War, he was killed at Gallipoli. His papers are now in the Bodleian Library.
