Whether you are a dealer, or just a violin lover...where do you go for information about that fiddle that appears from someone’s attic, or is brought in the door by a customer? You look at the label, and it probably says “Stradivarius”, or “Guarnerius”, or “Stainer”, or “Amati”. But we know by now that the chances are very slim that one of those great makers’ instruments has found its way to you. But, what about the tens of thousands of other Violin Makers who have been laboring at the luthiers art since the mid 1500’s? When I first started researching violin makers, I was astounded at the number of reference books, and how expensive they were. All I really wanted to know was Who was this maker? When did they live? Where did they work? And was their work any good? This ‘Databook’ is my collection of that information – collected over the years from many, many sources. Here you will find information for makers from the earliest days of violin making, all the way up to contemporary makers from all over the world.
